We Need the Strength of the Lord

 January 19, 2024

Friday

Ephesians 6:10 (NASB 2020) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

We often operate on our own power. We don’t call on the Lord to drive to work, buy our groceries or do the crossword puzzle. Generally, we assume that the Lord really doesn’t care when we do those things as long as they aren’t keeping us from doing what He has commanded us to do. We assume we don’t need His strength to do these things.

This is where we are wrong. While the Lord may not give us the word needed for forty-five across on that crossword, we still need to be connected to Him. It is in this connection that we have His strength. We need His strength even if we aren’t applying it to something difficult.

The muscled man who can pick up a car still has that strength when he is relaxing in a hot tub. He can still lift a car from the victim of a wreck if so needed.

The Christian should not think of God’s strength as something that is absent when it is not being used. That strength helps the Christian make wise decisions. That strength warns the Christian from dangerous situations. That strength helps the Christian give and receive wise counsel. The Lord’s strength helps the Christian flee temptation. The Lord’s strength helps the Christian confront the devil.

The context of this scripture is spiritual warfare. The devil and his demons are seeking someone to devour. We need God’s strength when we don’t see any need because we don’t know when we will be attacked.

So, we accept the Lord’s strength everyday. We need it.
