The Table Set before Us

 January 15, 2024

Monday

Psalm 23:5–6 (NASB 2020) 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Certainly goodness and faithfulness will follow me all the days of my life, And my dwelling will be in the house of the Lord forever.

Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of the table that the Lord has prepared for us. Many times that’s because we have focused on our enemies rather than the blessings already prepared for us. If we know the Lord and trust in Him for our salvation, we are saved but that salvation will pale in comparison to the salvation that awaits us in His presence. The enemies aren’t permanent. This salvation is.

Believers exist in two realms: This world in which we struggle and the one that is beyond this world. The struggles are real but so is the table that is prepared before us in the presence of our enemies.

What are these enemies? It isn’t the same for everyone but they must include old age and death. Surely, cancer and heart disease. Maybe discouragement and betrayals. Even our own bad decisions may haunt us at times. These will be gone one day when we see the table prepared for us.

Now, we have the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness. That doesn’t assure us that our enemies will be silent. It assures us that He is with us. This is true all the days of our lives. Especially today. We can’t say He is with us all the days if He isn’t with us today. When tomorrow becomes today, He will always be with us.

It is nice to know where this table is. It is in the house of the Lord. No, that’s not church. It is a place called heaven where no one can disobey the Lord. It is a place of great peace. It is a place of great joy. It is an absolutely secure place. It is a place where our enemies are not allowed.

We face today because we have a table being prepared for us right now.
