C.S. Lewis wrote of Narnia, a place where it was always winter, but never Christmas. Is that the place we are trying to create?
We eliminated prayer from schools because we didn't want to impose our faith on others. It seems reasonable that we should do so. We gave up our faith for the faith of others. We didn't consider sharing the time. We didn't think of allowing other faiths present to express themselves. We eliminated it for everyone.
We made sure that we didn't give any preference to any faith by eliminating the references to God in public institutions. There have been efforts to get "In God We Trust" taken off of our money. There were more recent efforts to eliminate "under God" from our Pledge of Allegiance. Did these words truly give a preference to any faith?
Nearly all television programs present religious people as obsessed individuals whose elevator won't make it to the second floor. They are blind to the needs of others for the sake of their religious rituals. They are laughed at, stereotyped and proven wrong by those enlightened secular folks.
We have become like children who know more than their parents ever could. We don't need our parents to impose their values on us. They don't know anything anyway. And, thus, we consider God. We are treating God as One we no longer need. We don't need His standards; those morals that keep us from having a good time. We can make up our own. We can live without Him.
Where will our world go without Christ? What will it be like?
There will be no values unless they are carefully monitored. Therefore, there will be no trust between individuals. There will be no safety for there can be no safety without trust. There will be violence for violence is natural in a world without safety. There will be chaos for chaos is the definition of a violent world.
Now, I ask you, is this the direction our world is taking? Are we becoming more valueless, less trusting, less safe, and more violent? It is a world that is always winter and never Christmas.
The answer to this dilemma is found in our own hearts and our own prayers. Our world may eliminate Christmas but we must be those who celebrate it all year long. We are those whose joy can't be stolen. We are those whose prayers are always heard. We are those whose days are ordered and accomplished. We are those who are fulfilled. We have the message of Christmas in our hearts. We are those who give it to others gladly. We are those who will see our world know Christmas again.
Psalm 51:12-13 (NIV)
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
