America was started on a shoestring determined to survive and held deep religious beliefs. She printed money but made sure that she didn't depend upon her money by placing "In God We Trust" prominently on its face. She kept prayer as a means of beginning her governing bodies in line with what was right. She made sure that faith was something that was believed rather than legislated.
America has been blessed with resources and hard working, faithful people. She has stood for that which is right when other countries were selfish. She has fought for the oppressed. She has had the character to struggle through prejudices but she continues to overcome them. She has the character to reward what is truly good and punish that which is bad. She has had the values of right and wrong running through her bloodstream.
And America has become prosperous. Is there a inherent danger in prosperity? Does it mean that people will stop listening to God and forget what is right and wrong?
Those who have a close walk with God must always beware of prosperity. They must make special efforts to remember who God is. They must do so because they have the resources to act without Him. They must make sure that they walk carefully. The must do so because their prosperity can buy their way out of their failures. Prosperity can be a factor is forgetting who God is.
There will be people who will not come to church this Easter that have always gone to church on Easter. It seems that they would never have thought of missing church on Easter in the past but their own belief in their prosperity will be greater than their need for God.
God, however, is the Almighty. He has a way of bringing His people low so that they will remember Him. He will not remain forgotten.
Do you know someone who has become prosperous and no longer has much use for God? Maybe they walked with Him when they were poor. Maybe they gave Him glory and praise when they were small. Now, they forget Him.
A nation goes the way of her people. Has America largely forgotten God in her prosperity?
God is telling His people to come home.
Jeremiah 22:21 (ESV)
21 I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, ‘I will not listen.’ This has been your way from your youth, that you have not obeyed my voice.
